The Cabinet is responsible for the daily operations of the Government of Greenland. Unlike the Greenland Parliament, which works during the two annual sessions, the Cabinet works all the year round.
The Parliament appoints the Premier, who then appoints his Cabinet of ministers. Today, the Cabinet is divided into nine ministries, each headed by a minister. In the ministries departments handle the practical administrative work. The ministers are politically responsible for the work of these departments.
The Cabinet’s administration must be performed within the frameworks adopted by the Greenland Parliament in the form of acts and appropriations. The Greenland Parliament supervises the Cabinet’s work through, for example, audits of the Accounts of the Greenland Treasury. The Cabinet’s administration is also supervised by an ombudsman who keeps an eye on the Cabinet’s administration to ensure that it is in accordance with the legislation and good administration practice.
The Cabinet must also comply with the Danish Constitution, Act on Greenland Self-Government and international conventions in its administration of the tasks of the Government of Greenland.
The current Cabinet is based on political cooperation between Inuit Ataqatigiit, Demokraatit, and Kattusseqatigiit Partiiat. The Coalition Agreement was entered into on June 10th, 2009.
