Parliament

The Parliament is normally elected for a period of four years but elections may be called early. The most recent election was held on December 3, 2002. Since 1988 the Greenland Parliament has had a Presidency comprising four members of the Parliament and the Chairman.

The Chairman chairs meetings in the Parliament, of which there is normally one in the spring and one in the autumn. The Chairman also ensures that transcripts of parliamentary meetings are published in both Greenlandic and Danish. In addition the Chairman administers Greenland's membership of the Nordic Council and liaises with the Danish parliament.

The Greenland Parliament Bureau is in charge of day-to-day administration.

The Greenland Parliament establishes the following standing committees, which are statutory according to the act adopted by the Greenland Parliament on the Greenland Parliament and Government:

The Greenland Parliament Finance Committee;

Committees for the auditing of Treasury accounts;

The Foreign and Security Policy Committee.Each committee comprises five members of parliament, who must not be members of the Greenland government.

The two members of the Danish parliament act as supervisors of the Foreign and Security Policy Committee.
